The rules of marketing are to never send someone from your own site, but I don’t care. I want you to leave here and run to your nearest theater. It is that good.
There’s much more to this than just the drama of the Story. You will experience wonderful musical performances interspersed with short deep teaching on some of the names of God that will make your understanding of Christmas explode. Then, just when your emotions, heart, and spirit conjoin to the highest pitch, the story of Joseph, Mary, and the coming King plays out on screen.
Tears kept running down my cheek, and I wasn’t sure why.
What I Loved About Christmas With The Chosen
Aesthetics.
The production is beautiful. Using the Jerusalem set the film crew filmed on in Utah for Season Two, the architecture provides the perfect backdrop. The musical artists as dressed in neutrals that play off the set creating a current look to enhance the classic Christmas music.
Music.
I mean. I will watch over and over to listen to the incredible music. Picking a favorite is like picking a favorite child. But the two that moved me the most:
The Bonner Family singing How Great Thou Art. I could barely contain myself. I wanted to jump up, raise my hands, and sing along. The rest of the audience would not have appreciated that so I contained myself. Besides, my voice would have ruined their perfect harmonies.
Brandon Lake singing Gratitude. I read that this song has leapt forward in the charts from all the people searching for it after this movie. I am printing out the lyrics and I putting this on replay. This lyric grabbed me around the throat:
So come on, my soul
Oh, don't you get shy on me
Lift up your song
'Cause you've got a lion inside of those lungs
Get up and praise the Lord
I feel like I need to apologize to Phil Wickham, Matt Maher, Maverick City, and Jordan Feliz, because man, it all excelled and exceeded my expectations. Oh, and the One Voice Children’s Choir- astounding. And guess what? The soundtrack is available!
Soliloquies.
I wasn’t sure what to call these. Teachings? Monologues? Dramatic readings? Four of the show’s actors present impassioned and well-researched explanations of four of God’s names. The connections to the condescension of God to man that Christmas is all about magnifies the Lord and His actions of this season. These aren’t just breaks from the music, but deep words that make every song more meaningful.
The Messengers.
This episode concentrating on Mary and Joseph and the birth of the Lord paints a vivid picture. But the brilliance is in weaving in Mary’s Magnificat from Luke 1:46-55 into the script. I never realized that when I read her words in Luke 1, I treated it like she said them once at the moment of inspiration and never thought of them again. But the woman who treasured these things in her heart, would have treasured and repeated those words.
If you haven’t watched The Shepherd (the video that started it all) watch it here before you go!
Joy to the World.
Never have I heard such a choir of talent assembled to belt out so much praise in one song. Phil Wickham leads with the most astounding back up imaginable. When my CD arrives, I’m definitely playing it in my living room and dancing while I sing along.
Why It Matters
After the show we went for dessert with our friends. On the TV in the corner of the restaurant played some Christmas specials. Girls dressed in scanty Santa outfits (Santa would never be caught dead in one of those—not that he could fit in one) gyrated about a singer in, how should I say?.... an interesting ensemble. I couldn’t hear what was sung, but the difference from what I just viewed couldn’t have been more obvious. This show glorified the singers and drew attention to themselves.
On Christmas With The Chosen, every moment pointed away from the presenters and to Jesus. Every moment. Every song. Every drama. I feel more spiritually prepared for Christmas than I have in years.
We’ve endured much in the last 20 months. And the finish line seems more like a mirage than a destination. So the needed reminders resound in the deepest meaning:
God is with us.
Jesus understands the stinky brokenness of our world. He chose to come into this WITH us and FOR us.
The goodness of God and His love that made a way for us, costing Him everything and me nothing, should only result in my unending praise.
