EBENEZER: STONE OF HELP

Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth STONES from the brook and put them in his shepherd's pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine… So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a STONE, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David. 1 Samuel 17:40, 50

REMEMBER VERSE

And the people of Israel did not REMEMBER the LORD their God, who had delivered them from the hand of all their enemies on every side. Judges 8:34 ESV

DEVOTION

It’s easy to relegate David and Goliath to a children’s story. But if I do, I miss the point. David didn’t defeat Goliath. God did. He just used David to get the job done.

The last part of I Samuel 17:50 says, “There was no sword in the hand of David.” David had no business fighting Goliath. And stones should not have won the day. But David went into the field of battle saying, “… the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hand." 1 Samuel 17:47.

The Lord assigns His people battles. “Goliaths” are scary, and I’m tempted to run and hide in my Refuge, who offers me comfort, and then puts me right back in the battlefield. But He never expects me to fight on my own. He expects me to take what I have (like David’s five stones), and face my enemy in His power.

David’s Rock transformed his STONES into missiles. He multiplied David’s strength by His own. David trusted. Obeyed. Acted. And faced his enemy in the power of the Lord.

What do you face this year? No matter what it is, you will face it with your Rock who fights for you and through you.

  • …”Do not be afraid of them. REMEMBER the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes." Nehemiah 4:14b

  • PRAYER: Lord, please help me always REMEMBER You as I approach any battle. Please keep me in line behind You, following You as I fight for my family.

  • “For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” Deuteronomy 20:4

  • PRAYER: Thank you Lord for going with me against every one of my enemies. Thank You that I am never alone, unprotected, or unarmed. Thank You for being with me and being for me.
