Thou Shall Not Compare Thy Husband to Thy Friend's Facebook Husband

You know the kind of status I mean:

"To my husband who is the light of my day and the butter to my bread. You are my best friend, my soul mate, and the air to my lungs. I could not imagine life without you and I adore every moment of bliss that we share on this earth together."

Oh brother. You can almost hear the movie music in the background.

Just like Facebook statuses, movies can also make a girl feel just a tad dissatisfied. I mean, why can't our husband continually sweep us off our feet, and bring us flowers, and dance with us in the moonlight, and say just the right thing? Even their arguments are perfect.

Here is the problem with movies: they aren't real. They involve no mail, bills, laundry, home repairs, or any of the other mundane details of which life is so magnificently composed. (And my personal theory is if the guy is saying JUST the right thing his lines were most likely written by a girl.)

And here is the problem with Facebook statuses: they are not full disclosure statements. They say nothing about where he puts his dirty socks or how often he helps in the kitchen. They don't report on morning breath, the effect of beans on his digestive system, or if he willingly takes the trash out. They merrily gloss over the top of reality and fail to plumb the depths of true actuality.

I heartily applaud every wife who honors her husband with a glowing Facebook status. But I will NOT assume that after having read that status I know what kind of marriage they have or what kind of husband he is.

Life is messy. So are relationships. That is what makes them so interesting!

So go ENJOY the husband you have without sabotaging him with unrealistic expectations.

After all:

"We’re not, understand, putting ourselves in a league with those who boast that they’re our superiors. We wouldn’t dare do that. But in all this comparing and grading and competing, they quite miss the point."        II Cor. 10:12- The Message
