How can we answer God's call in the second half of our life if we're mad at Him for how the first half turned out? We need a cure for the bitterness, anger, and jealousy that easily trip us up, particularly in our empty nest season. This episode lines out the cure found in Psalm 73.

Show Notes

Psalm 73

Where the bitterness begins (Verses 1-14)

  • Psalm 73:2 - 3: But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

The problem with bitterness

  • Psalm 73:15: If I had said, "I will speak thus," I would have betrayed the generation of your children.

What starts the change

  • Psalm 73:16 - 17: But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, UNTIL I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end.

God’s work

  • Psalm 73:23: Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand.

  • Psalm 73:24 : You guide me with your counsel

  • Psalm 73:25: there is nothing on earth that I desire besides You.

  • Psalm 73:26: God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

  • Psalm 73:28: for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all your works.

The Cure

So, here is the cure for the bitter heart:
1. Let God judge.
2. Turn gaze up instead of down.
3. Hold God's hand
4. Get God's counsel
5. Desire only God and let Him be your strength and refuge.
