Day 22: REMEMBERING God Conquers Fear

EBENEZER: STONE OF HELP

Fear not, nor be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? And you are my witnesses! Is there a God besides me? There is no ROCK; I know not any. Isaiah 44:8

REMEMBER VERSE

But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children's children, to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments. Psalm 103:17-18

DEVOTION

We substitute many idols for our ROCK. We form our own rocks, like investment portfolios, college degrees, the perfect job. We place security in our homes, relationships, or achievements.

However, even good things cannot preserve us, because they can all fail. Maybe that is why fear and anxiety is epidemic in our society. We place hope and trust in our handmade idols. But the whole time we suspect our foundation is faulty. It won’t stand against disaster.

What would happen if I refused to TRUST in my own creations and instead fully trusted in the steadfast love of the Lord? I’ll tell you what: my fear would flee. I can’t trust God and fear anything at the same time.

If I didn’t have the Lord of the universe fighting for me, fear would be legitimate. If my life was up to fate, and luck was all that ruled my course, then I should be afraid.

But BECAUSE there is no ROCK but the Lord, I can plant me feet on Him and never fear.

  • Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who have an anxious heart, "Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you. Isaiah 35:3-4

  • PRAYER: Thank you for saving me. I give you my anxious heart and ask You to fill it with Your grace.

  • On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: "Fear not, O Zion; let not your hands grow weak. The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing. Zephaniah 3:16-17

  • PRAYER: I am so grateful You are with me. Please quiet me with Your love and allow me to hear Your singing.

QUESTIONS

God tells us over and over to “Fear not!” Why do you think it is so easy to fear?

What parts of your life feel weak or feeble(Isaiah 35:3)? Ask for the Lord’s help in those situations.

CHALLENGE

Write out “DO NOT FEAR” and hang up somewhere prominent. Say it out loud throughout the day.

I REMEMBER the days of old; I MEDITATE on all that you have done; I PONDER the work of your hands. I stretch out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a parched land. Psalm 143:5-6

All Scripture from the ESV. Emphasis added.

Tomorrow on Day 23 we will remember the God In The Night
