Day 21: REMEMBERING Keeps Me From Being Shaken
EBENEZER: STONE OF HELP
He alone is my ROCK and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. ... He only is my ROCK and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty ROCK, my refuge is God. Psalm 62:2, 6-7
REMEMBER VERSE
These things I REMEMBER, as I pour out my soul … My soul is cast down within me; therefore I REMEMBER you from the land of Jordan and of Hermon, from Mount Mizar. Psalm 42:4, 6
DEVOTION
I saw a LifeFlight helicopter descending. Terror gripped my heart as I raced to the location of my son’s wreck. How could everything possibly be okay?
In the end, we dodged the worst-case scenario. The car was totaled, but because the seat belt held him, he sustained only minor injuries.
Jesus is like our heavenly seat belt. He holds us, and the more violent the circumstances, the tougher His grip gets. Day to day, when no disaster occurs, we almost forget He’s there. But then CRASH! We’re blindsided or t-boned or we do something stupid like run a red light, and there’s a wreck.
But HE HOLDS US. We aren’t shaken. We’re preserved and sheltered. That’s why, when I’m cast down or despondent, when I’m scared or want to stop trying, I must REMEMBER my ROCK protects me and prevents me from shaking.
He holds me. I am safe.
”You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off"; fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:9b-10
PRAYER: Thank You Lord for holding and helping me. I confess I easily fear or become dismayed. How grateful I am for Your promise to strengthen and help me. I rest in You today.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. I and the Father are one." John 10:27-30
PRAYER: Thank you for calling my name Lord. I want to listen for Your call and obey Your voice. I don’t want to follow anyone but You. Thank You for holding me and protecting me from any who would try and take me.
QUESTIONS
Think about the fact that you “Will not be greatly shaken.” What does that mean to you?
What does it mean that you are Jesus’s sheep and you know His voice?
Where is He directing you that is hard to follow?
CHALLENGE
In Psalm 42:4, the Psalmist “pours out my soul.” Pour out your soul today to the Lord. He’s your safe place.
All Scripture from the ESV. Emphasis added.
Tomorrow on Day 22 we will remember that God Conquers Fear
